Acceptable Collection Tube(s) or Specimen
Sterile body fluid (peritoneal fluid, pleural fluid, pericardial fluid, synovial fluid, CSF) in sterile container or eswab.
Bone marrow - Sterile container, SPS/Isolator system, or green top (lithium or sodium heparin) - Entire collection
Processing Instructions
Sterile body fluid (peritoneal fluid, pleural fluid, pericardial fluid, synovial fluid, CSF) - Obtain sterile body fluid via percutaneous needle aspiration or surgery. Expel any air bubbles from syringe and immediately inject into an anaerobic transport system or sterile screw-cap container. Always submit as much fluid as possible. Do not submit swab dipped in fluid.
Bone marrow - Sterile container, SPS/Isolator system, or green top (lithium or sodium heparin) - Entire collection
Stability
Stability: ≤ 24 hrs optimal, up to 72 hours accepted.
Note: Refrigeration of specimens may inhibit recovery of fastidious organisms. Recollect or notify lab if specimen has been refrigerated.
