Clinical Significance
Low molecular weight heparins(LMWH) and unfractionated heparins(UFH) are used for the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic diseases. The quantitative determination of plasma LMWH/UFH levels is preferred/encouraged for monitoring treatment efficacy. UFH-pharmacy recommends drawing 6 hrs post heparin infusion or 6 hrs post dose adjustment. LMWH- pharmacy recommends the 1st level drawn 4 hrs post 3rd dose. Patients can be on LMWH Q12 or Q24 injections. Subsequent LMWH levels aren’t necessary unless there is a dose adjustment.
Reference Range
The therapeutic range is for LMWH is 0.5-1.0 IU/ml.
